This course primarily focuses on bacteria, but also includes an overview of viruses and the human immune response to both bacterial and viral pathogens. Class discussion emphasizes the structure and function of bacteria and viruses, antibiotics and antiviral therapeutics, the host response to infection, and subversion of the host immune response by both bacteria and viruses. Non-laboratory course. Students who have received credit for BIOL 340 may not receive credit for this course. Prerequisite: BIOL 133; (BIOL 213, BIOL 223. BIOL 224, BIOL 233, or BIOL 243); and (CHEM 119, CHEM 120, or CHEM 150).
