This course focuses on viral molecular biology and applied concepts, such as innate and adaptive immunity, virulence and pathogenesis, emerging viruses, epidemics and pandemics, and the development of antiviral therapeutics and vaccines. RNA viruses, such as Zika, Ebola, coronaviruses, and influenza, comprise the majority of the viruses discussed. Reading of the primary literature is a large component of this course. Non-laboratory course. Prerequisite: BIOL 233 and (BIOL 223 or BIOL 224 or BIOL 243).
